Connection in Action profile: Victoria Literacy Connection
Letters that cross generations.
Some of the most meaningful connections are formed one letter at a time.
Victoria Literacy Connection (VLC) is a charitable non-profit that provides free literacy support for children, youth, and adults across Southern Vancouver Island. But one of their most beloved programs goes well beyond reading and writing — the Intergenerational Pen Pal Club connects community members across decades through the letter writing.
Launched during the pandemic to combat isolation, the program initially matched youth aged 10+ with elders 60+. Word spread quickly. Today, participants range from age 10 to 110, with matches made across at least a 20-year age difference. Over 3,000 letters have been exchanged, and more than 40% of participants have been writing to their pen pals for over two years. Some share artwork, poetry, and handmade crafts. Others play games by mail.
“I have met an incredible young person, learned more about their passions, had a snapshot of their life and received some beautiful, thoughtful writing. Being a penpal has introduced me to new perspectives, fresh ideas, and confirmed values that I now know, transcend generations. I treasure this experience. Thank you for making it possible.”
— Pen Pal, aged 67, matched for 2 years
