Connection in Action profile: Victoria Native Friendship Centre
Sharing burdens, celebrating together.
Indigenous people have a long history of valuing and creatively uplifting social connectedness in communities. And that legacy continues in our region today.
With a dedicated staff of over 200 people providing more than 75 programs, supports, and services to 21,000 off-reserve Indigenous people and 4,500 on-reserve citizens in the 10 local Nations, the Indigenous-led Victoria Native Friendship Centre (VNFC) encourages and promotes the well-being of urban Indigenous people by strengthening individuals, families, and community. From daycare and early childhood development to education, employment, and food security programs, along with cultural and arts events, the Centre is a vital resource for supporting wellness and a sense of belonging.
VNFC also hosts the Victoria Urban Reconciliation Dialogue, a network of partners advancing reconciliation in the Greater Victoria Area. From this blueprint, the VNFC also created the Community Learning Program, an experiential journey in reconciliation and relationship-building for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants—over the years, this program has brought hundreds of people together to learn in a warm, open Indigenous space where everyone feels safe to grow.
“When you are grieving or need help, you come together and the burden is lightened. When you are joyous and celebrating, you come together and the celebration is bigger.”
— Ron Rice-Wush’q, M.G.C., VNFC Executive Director
The VNFC’s Community Action and Learning Department also delivers a weekly Community Soup Lunch, welcoming community to a free, healthy delicious lunch on most Fridays from noon to 1pm, with tours of the VNFC available afterwards.
