Neighbours Helping Neighbours

Neighbours Helping Neighbours west coast kick off!

ByMolly Rose, Program & Curriculum Designer May 28, 2024July 11, 2025

Who do you call when you could use a hand with a simple household task, when you need to borrow an item. How do you stay safe during an extreme heat event or other emergencies? Friends, family, and services aren’t always available or accessible – this is where Neighbours Helping Neighbours (NHN) comes in!

Are you interesting in connecting with neighbours and learning how you might help each other? Join us at our next Meet Up at James Bay New Horizons in Victoria on May 31st, 12-2pm.

Building Resilient Neighbourhoods is kicking off our Neighbours Helping Neighbours (NHN) initiative in Victoria with James Bay New Horizons, and in Vancouver with the West End Seniors’ Network. We’re bringing individuals together from different buildings or streets who are keen to engage their neighbours in connecting, preparing for emergencies, or helping one another in different ways.

Some people have said they already know 3-5 neighbours from whom they’d feel comfortable asking for a small favour–but many also expressed concern for people who don’t have anyone nearby that they can turn to. This is the heart of NHN – how do we ensure everyone is connected and has people they can rely on?

NHN brings neighbours together for connection, fun activities, learning, experimenting, and planning – Read an interview with NHN coordinator Molly Rose.

Over the coming months, we’ll be hosting monthly NHN “Learning and Doing” Meetups. Interested residents are invited to come learn about strategies, receive resources, tips, and toolkits, and support one another in trying different approaches to strengthening neighbourly support.

Would you like to explore ways to get started with your own neighbours? Join us at the next Meet Up at James Bay New Horizons in Victoria on May 31st, 12-2pm!
